Pilates at In-Balance
Pilates is the perfect exercise for everyone at every stage of life. Whether you are wanting to improve your posture, relieve back pain or enhance flexibility and coordination, Pilates offers a safe and effective way to boost your well being.
WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is but one way that our physiotherapists are able use exercise to both assess and treat pathology, pain, postural problems, muscle imbalance and poor function. Our physiotherapists are able to guide exercise activity through both the early and later stages of your injury.
Early participation in exercise helps to prevent some of the deconditioning and compensatory movement patterns that can occur when you are injured and in pain. Our physiotherapists are able to communicate with your GP, other treating practitioners, coaches and trainers to ensure that your overall wellbeing is addressed. If you are pregnant, you can feel confident that a physiotherapist has the knowledge of safe exercise modification necessary during your pregnancy.
GETTING STARTED
Do I need an assessment or can I go straight to class?
If you are generally healthy, with no current injuries but have never participated in Pilates before, then it is recommended that you start with one or two sessions of private tuition followed by Beginners classes. If you are familiar with Pilates exercise and equipment you are usually able to participate in our regular classes.
Private sessions with our Pilates Instructors provide safe, basic tuition in the art, language and movement of Pilates exercise. These sessions are suitable if you have no previous experience or need a refresher.
The most cost effective way of beginning the process is to purchase our Pilates Package. This provides for a one hour private session followed by 2 beginners classes.
If you have a history of pain or injury, you may be required to attend for an assessment. An assessment will enable the physiotherapist to determine the appropriate starting level for your pilates experience. It is possible that the Physio will determine at this time that classes are not recommended until certain issues have been addressed. this may be achieved through one to one pilates tuition, hands on treatment or referral for other investigations in the case of certain pathologies. Sometimes the Physiotherapist may determine that participation in our studio sessions with a personalised exercise program is a better option for you.
It is now a requirement that you have an assessment with a Physiotherapist or EP prior to participating in mums and bubs or pregnancy pilates classes. This is particularly important if you have any injuries, major abdominal separation or hernias, Caesar or underlying medical conditions such as gestational diabetes or painful injuries. This assessment may be claimable with private health funds.
Please let our reception staff know if you have any underlying issues that may require assessment if you are unsure.

Class Types
Many options available for the different ages and stages in life
REFORMER FUNDAMENTALS /BEGINNERS
The Pilates reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment which looks a little like a bed with springs, a sliding carriage, ropes and pulleys. Using the reformer is similar to mat based Pilates however adds more intensity and is more dynamic than mat based Pilates. The springs resistance make exercises either easier or more challenging and allow for a greater repertoire of exercises with more variety. Reformer Pilates challenges your dynamic control, helps muscle endurance, strength, balance, co-ordination and more. Our fundamental classes will introduce you to the language, art and experience that Pilates offers.
All our reformer classes have a maximum of 7 participants to ensure you get plenty of attention during the class. Fundamental classes are suitable for you if you have had some basic instruction in Pilates method from previous experience, via a Pilates introductory package or with your Physio following recovery from injury or pain.
REFORMER DYNAMIC FLOW /INTERMEDIATE
If you have already had some experience with Pilates and have a reasonable level of control, coordination and flexibility then you might enjoy a little more challenge with our flow classes. These classes build on the fundamental Pilates exercises and will help you to further improve your postural control, breath awareness, strength and balance.
REFORMER CHALLENGE /ADVANCED
These classes will require you to work deeper with more intensity into increasingly more challenging Pilates repertoire. It is probably fair to say that you should have had regular Pilates practice and a reasonable degree of strength before attempting these classes.
PILATES FOR RUNNERS
Specifically tailored for recreational or professional runners. Using Reformers, matwork and other small equipment, exercises are designed to help improve flexibility, endurance and technique. A great way to condition muscles in order to prevent injuries and improve running performance. These classes are instructed by a Physiotherapist.
OVER 55's CLASSES
This is a small class for people who may require some modifications as they exercise. If you need to improve flexibility, balance, strength, muscle tone and confidence this is the class for you. It's also a great option for people who are recovered from surgery such as joint replacement and are needing to get back into exercise safely.
MUMS AND BUBS
These classes are for rehabilitation and exercises performed will help you recover safely from the pregnancy and birth of your baby. Although our classes are designed by Physiotherapists or Exercise Physiologists, it is recommended that you have consulted with your obstetrician or GP at your 6 week post natal check up prior to participating in classes. If you have had a Caesarian section it is recommended you wait a little longer for things to heal (usually 12 weeks).
It is now a requirement that you have an assessment with a Physiotherapist or EP prior to participating. This is particularly important if you have any injuries, major abdominal separation, Caesar or underlying medical or painful conditions. This assessment may be claimable with private health funds.
Once you have had an assessment and been given the all clear, you will be given access to our pre recorded mums and bubs pilates mat classes via our private online facebook group for 6 weeks. You will also be able to participate in our mums and bubs reformer classes.
As we cannot always guarantee that the classes will be conducted by Physiotherapists, and clinical notes are not being kept, there is no rebate for our pilates classes and this is reflected in our prices which are comparable and interchangeable with our regular classes.
Classes are designed to help restore the strength and endurance of your pelvic floor and reduce separation of your tummy muscles. Participating can also help to relieve neck, shoulder and lower back pain or stiffness. Bringing your baby to class is also a fun and social way to meet other new mums in the community.
**As we do not have childcare facilities (and will be using reformer beds which can be dangerous for little fingers), we are unable to cater for mobile toddlers. These classes are best suited to mums with babies (6 weeks to 6 months) who are yet to crawl.
PREGNANCY PILATES
This is a small class designed by our Physiotherapists for women in all stages of pregnancy in a supportive environment. The emphasis of these classes is to improve your posture and enhance awareness and activation of the muscles which support your spine and pelvis. This will also help to prepare you for the physical demands of giving birth. Specific modifications to exercises are made as the pregnancy progresses.
A medical clearance from your GP or obstetrician may be required prior to participating in these classes, particularly if you have any pre existing or pregnancy related health concerns.
